Start by understanding your current loan

Note your outstanding amount, current interest rate, remaining tenure and any prepayment or foreclosure charges. This helps you compare options fairly.

1. Personal loan balance transfer

If another lender offers a lower rate on your profile, moving your outstanding loan may reduce your EMI or total interest. Account for foreclosure charges on the old loan and processing fees on the new one.

2. Overdraft / Flexi options

For some borrowers, a flexi or overdraft structure — where interest is charged mainly on the amount used — can lower monthly outgo. These products have their own fees and conditions and are not suitable for everyone.

3. Part-prepayment

Paying a lump sum towards the principal reduces the outstanding amount. Depending on the lender, you can then choose to lower your EMI or keep the EMI and shorten the tenure. Check prepayment charges first.

4. Tenure modification, where offered

Some lenders may allow you to extend the remaining tenure, which lowers the EMI but usually increases total interest. This is offered at the lender's discretion and may involve charges.

What to keep in mind

  • Compare total cost, not just the monthly EMI
  • Add up all charges before switching or prepaying
  • Keep paying current EMIs on time while you explore options
  • Read the sanction letter and key fact statement carefully
